May 2006 Glorious Shade I couldn't imagine when I planted the October Glory Red Maple in 1999 that it would ever be big enough to shade the backyard play area.

A Tree Grower's Diary Where the Shade Falls
PLOTTING THE SHADE IN MY YARD
Illustration and text by Julie Walton Shaver
These trees live in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6, Central New Jersey. When we moved here in 1996,
the only healthy trees on the property were the dogwood and the 50-foot black cherry behind the shed. The rest was all sun
all the time. We needed shade!
