A Tree Grower's Diary
Where Julie's Trees Are Planted

Illustration and text by Julie Walton Shaver

The redbuds, the purple European beeches and the Japanese zelkovas live elsewhere.

These trees live in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6, Central New Jersey. When we moved here in 1996, the only healthy trees on the property were the dogwood and the 50-foot black cherry behind the shed. The rest was all sun all the time. We needed shade!
